Two stories this week: A lengthy feature on two families who have been attending Hillsdale College for four generations…

And an update on the swim team…

Hillsdale just installed a new city manager, Mitch Mitchell. He took some impressive measures to boost Jonesville’s economy while he was serving as city manager there, and we’re all hoping he’ll do the same for Hillsdale. The town could use a little more night life.

I also wrote two stories for the Sports page. The first one was a follow-up to my Oct. 4 article about coaches’ leisure activities. This one focuses on their family lives.

And now, perhaps the most exciting announcement of the week: I picked up the swim team beat. I write sports stories here and there, but I certainly don’t know much about swimming. But I’m not too concerned. The new coach is fantastic: thoughtful, personable, well spoken. I’ll be glad for the chance to get to know him a little better. And who knows–I might learn something about sports writing, too.

No sensational news stories this week–just a sports feature and a music column.

The sports story is the first in a two-part series about coaches’ lives outside of their chosen sports. The second, which will run next week, will focus on their family lives.

And the music column is about the new Radiohead album, which was announced this past Sunday. It’s the only news coverage our paper gave on the subject, and it also offers a healthy dose of commentary by yours truly.

‘A-Maizing’ event to debut in Albion

October 3, 2007

Employees of Anna’s Flowers in Albion are expanding their affinity for plants and flowers to corn harvesting.

Owner Anna Merritt and her employee Mary Kinney Habicht organized the A-Maizing Corn Harvest, which will take place for the first time in downtown Albion this weekend.

“This is not a festival. This is a harvest,” Merrit said.
