collegian round-up, nov. 15

Take a look at the photo accompanying the story below. Why does it look empty and unfocused?

Read the story to find out.

Second: I always feel lucky when I get to write a story about a topic of great personal interest to me. This feature about dream analysis falls into that category. I’m not a psychology major, of course; it’s just that I’ve been reading Freud and Lacan for a literary theory class, and this feature gave me a chance to dig much deeper into Freud’s ideas about dreams.

Finally, the swim team won their most recent meet, though their diver Charlotte tore a ligament.

My biggest story this week was a news piece about the physics department’s lack of funding for research–and talk about a nail-biter. I had a tough time tracking down some very important sources, so ended up turning it in at the last minute, far beyond the normal deadline.

At least it made the front page.

I also wrote a column about the Bruce Springsteen concert I attended on Monday. I’m a big fan of some of his early, early records. I should’ve known what to expect with this concert, I know, I know, but still, it was terribly upsetting.

And another update on the good ol’ Hillsdale College swim team. Good work, girls.

This week brought one of the most enjoyable features I’ve ever written. I rode along with a veteran pizza delivery guy for an evening, and he told me one story after another about crazy experiences on the job.

Since I was in and out of the car so much, and we were driving in the dark, I could hardly take any notes. Instead I relied on my digital recorder. That’s unusual for me, but it allowed me to capture some really long snatches of dialogue that I would have otherwise only captured in part.

Have a look:

And since there wasn’t much news with the swim team this week, I wrote a short profile on each of the freshman swimmers.
