The judges of last Thursday’s Edward Everett Prize in Oratory couldn’t pick a single winner, so judge Jack Krasula donated $3,000 for an extra first place prize.

Senior Dan Burfiend and junior Michael David tied for first place.

This year’s event marked Burfiend’s third victory – he also won in his freshman and junior years. He placed third his sophomore year.

Swim team ends season with 7th place at GLIACS

February 21, 2008

The Hillsdale College swim team returned home with a new school record, a handful of lifetime best times, and a seventh place finish in last week’s nine-team GLIAC Championship held in Indianapolis.

Sophomore Cassie Nielsen said the team felt satisfied with their performance, though the team pulled off a sixth place finish last year.

“I think we did overall as we’d expected,” she said. “We wanted to do better than sixth, but coming into it, I think we all realized the conference was faster this year.”

One day to end hunger

February 16, 2008

Participants in the End Hunger organization’s 24-hour prayer vigil filtered into Immanuel Lutheran Church on Friday afternoon, still warming their hands from the cold.

They’d planned to hold the vigil around a cross in the church’s front yard at W. Michigan Avenue and Brown Street, but the weather altered their plans.

“It’s just too cold to do it outside with wisdom,” said Dennis Beach, a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and coordinator of the event, which started at 3 p.m. Friday and will end at 3 p.m. today.

More space, less time for custodians

February 14, 2008

With the Grewcock Student Union adding 70,000 square feet to the campus total, Hillsdale College custodians and administrators are adjusting to a new cleaning schedule, which helps them keep campus clean without adding new employees.

Vicky Phetteplace, assistant superintendent of custodial services, said the college hired one new full-time employee and one part-time employee to accommodate the student union, adding to the approximately 40 custodians on staff. They also moved one veteran custodian from a part-time to a full-time position.

“We’re assessing the building’s needs, what each team member is doing, how long it takes to do that,” she said.

The morning star’s descent

February 14, 2008

Whenever I heard a DJ mention the Rolling Stones, as a kid, I always assumed they’d taken their name from the Bob Dylan song.

Simple chronology dispelled that misconception a long time ago. The band named themselves after a Muddy Waters song.

But I haven’t lost hope yet: Rolling Stone magazine released its first issue a year after Bob Dylan’s song hit radio stations. Maybe the song did accord as much influence as I wanted to believe.

Swim team faces final tourney

February 14, 2008

The last five months of practice come to a head this week for Hillsdale College’s swim team, at the annual GLIAC Championships.
The team left for the University of Indianapolis Wednesday, where they are competing against eight other teams. Events began Wednesday evening and last through Saturday.

Head coach Kurt Kirner said the team has a great deal riding on this meet.

“This is the meet that could catapult them to NCAAs,” he said. “This is where the fastest swimming will occur, and the idea is to get them to a place where they’ll go to that next level. So there’s a lot at stake.”

Foundation works with schools to fight obesity

February 10, 2008

For students in six Jackson County elementary schools, weekly lessons in eating healthy, exercising and avoiding tobacco have become part of the curriculum.

The Foundation for a Healthy Community this semester launched the second year of its Health 4 Youth program, a partnership between the schools and Foote Hospital’s health-education affiliate.

At participating schools, the Foundation for a Healthy Community sends registered dietitians and fitness specialists to teach weekly sessions about healthy living.

Officials at the participating schools said they’re excited to see the changes the second year will bring.

Digital media that holds its own

February 7, 2008

In the wake of Web 2.0, print journalism is fighting for its life. Almost every major newspaper in the country now offers the same content on their websites, for free, as they do in the physical copies, which cost money.

But at least newspapers are still hanging on. Music journalism lost that battle a long time ago.

When the “Village Voice” was acquired by New Times Media in 2005, they quickly fired the great Robert Christgau, the self-proclaimed (and widely acknowledged) “dean of American rock critics” – and the magazine has sloped steadily downhill ever since.[Full text here.]
