
Four juniors at North Adams-Jerome High School put their organic chemistry lessons into practice when they created their own biodiesel fuel during their Tuesday morning class.
Though only one of the students owns a driver’s license, teacher Chris Voisin said he thought all the students would find the project pertinent.
“To me, what was more real than organic chemistry is, how does organic chemistry apply in their real lives?” he said. “And at four dollars a gallon…”
He said he kept the project as practical as he could, by using soda bottles for mixing and grocery store canola oil for the chemical mixture. The cost averaged $1.50 per gallon.
